Choosing Between SMS, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger

Compare three messaging channels by audience, purpose and the work needed to support them.

By Waviq Technologies · Introductory guide

Begin with the conversation you need

A reminder, a new enquiry and a support conversation have different needs. Ask where your audience already contacts your business, what information you need to exchange and who will respond when automation cannot help. The right choice depends on industry, audience, location, consent requirements and use case.

SMS: concise updates and simple next steps

SMS can be considered for short updates and reminders using a telephone number. Keep the sender and purpose clear, and decide how replies reach your team. Plan appropriate consent, opt-out support and provider requirements before sending. Delivery is dependent on networks and the messaging setup, so a sent message should not be treated as proof that a customer acted on it.

WhatsApp: guided customer conversations

WhatsApp can support a conversational journey when it fits the audience and the business use case. Consider how the account will be managed, what information is needed and how a person takes over. Platform permissions and rules may affect available workflows. Confirm the current requirements for your project instead of assuming that every planned message can be sent.

Facebook Messenger: enquiries through your Page

Facebook Messenger may be useful when people already contact your business through its Facebook Page. A guided conversation can answer a common question or gather an enquiry for follow-up. Keep the flow focused, provide a human route and review the applicable platform requirements. A contact on one channel should not automatically be treated as permission to market on another.

Use country guidance as a starting point

Waviq recommends discussing SMS first for Canada and the USA, and WhatsApp first for India. Alternatives include Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp in Canada, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger in the USA, and Instagram and SMS in India. These are starting points, not absolute claims about country preferences. Compare the options against your actual audience, consent process and team capacity before choosing.
